A North Carolina man who has been searching for his missing sister for the past 42 years now has some answers.

Tim Young said his sister Janice Marie Young ran away from their adoptive home in Virginia to escape abuse back in 1973.  He never saw her again.

"We get to school, and we got off the bus and she said, 'I love you and see you later,’” Tim Young said. “And I never did.”

Over the years, Young never gave up looking for his sister.

He continued his search online for information and recently came across a sketch of someone resembling his sister.

The composite listed the victim as an unidentified teen and victim of a 1973 homicide in Florida. Young called authorities in St. Petersburg who told him she was pushed into traffic by a man who was arrested but never prosecuted.

The case went cold. Investigators later exhumed the teen’s body, but it wasn’t until Young’s phone call that they were able to put together the missing pieces -- her name and the DNA to prove it.

Young said police sent him a DNA kit, and it turned out to be a match.

“It was devastating,” Young said. “In the back of my mind I kind of knew it was her, but I was hoping it wasn’t.”

Young described his sister as a free spirit and said it’s a shame her life was cut short.

“It’s a waste,” Young said. “She could have made a positive impact on a lot of people’s lives. She was a good person. At least I can finally bring Marie home with me, where she belongs."
