T.I. arrest: Petition urges police to drop charges against rapper

Days after T.I. was arrested outside his gated community in Henry County, Georgia, an online petition has surfaced urging police to drop the charges against the Atlanta rapper.

>> On AJC.com: Atlanta rapper T.I. arrested after arguing with security guard

On Wednesday, the artist, whose legal name is Clifford Harris Jr., was charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, but the Care2 petition is calling on police to drop the charges.

The organizers called the charges “ridiculous” and said T.I. deserves an apology. They also said the security guards involved were “racist.”

“A simple check would have proven who he was and the situation could have resolved there. But instead they decided to involve the police which used the opportunity, not to aid the citizen in need, but support security who were in the wrong,” they wrote on the site

They are asking for 12,000 signatures. As of Saturday afternoon, they had garnered more than 11,700 supporters.

Via a live Instagram video, T.I. labeled the arrest “nonsense” and “small potatoes,” adding that God will take care of it. And his attorney, Steve Sadow, said his client “was wrongfully arrested.”

The incident occurred after T.I. arrived at the gate outside his community to find the security guard sleeping. While the guard initially refused to let the rapper in, he eventually admitted him, according to an incident report from Henry County police.

T.I. then walked from his home back to the guard booth — a distance of more than a half-mile — and began to argue again with the guard, who called police.

He was released from the Henry County Jail about 8 a.m. Wednesday after posting $2,250 bond.

'Royal wedding guest name' quiz could help scammers get your personal data

A seemingly innocent quiz that has been sweeping social media could help scammers get their hands on your personal data, experts say.

>> Royal Wedding: Meghan Markle, Prince Harry wed

"What's your royal wedding guest name?" the meme, which began circulating ahead of Saturday's royal wedding, asks.

>> Royal Wedding photos: The kiss, the ring and more highlights

One version reads as follows:

"In honor of the royal wedding, use your 'royal wedding guest name' this week. Start with either 'Lord' or 'Lady' – your first name is one of your grandparents' names. Your surname is the name of your first pet, then 'of' followed by the name of the street you grew up on."

So what's the problem? According to WXIX and HuffPost, sharing your "royal name" could reveal the answers to your security questions.

"If they’re asking you what could be security-rated questions like ‘What’s your mother’s maiden name?' – things that you would get asked that would allow you to perhaps reset a password, login to a system through some alternative approach – they could be taking that information and be attempting to hack into systems with that," Dave Hatter, WXIX's technology expert, told the TV station.

A computer security expert identified as Snow echoed the sentiment in a message to HuffPost, saying the answers "could be used to gain access to accounts (social media, banking, work email, etc) with potential for identity theft."

Meghan Markle, Michelle Obama trace families to same Georgia town

Michelle Obama and Meghan Markle both can trace their families to the same Georgia town, and not only were their ancestors both Jonesboro residents, they also lived there at the same time.

>> Read more trending news

According to professional genealogist Megan Smolenyak, both had third great-grandmothers living in Jonesboro in the years after the Civil War.

Meghan Markle’s great-great-great grandmother on her mother’s side was Martha Henderson, but was known as Mattie.

In the 1870 census Mattie was 10 years old, the daughter of Walker and Elizabeth Henderson.

That same 1870 census notes that Michelle Obama’s great-great-great grandmother, Melvinia Shields, also lived in Jonesboro at the same time.

She would have been an adult at that time, with children of her own.

>> Who is Meghan Markle?

“Maybe Mattie was a friend of Melvinia’s kids,” said Smolenyak, who discovered Michelle Obama’s connection to Georgia in 2009.

A Google alert drew Smolenyak’s attention back to Georgia, and to Markle’s connection.

She marveled at finding “both of these women in the same little town, living so closely together. ... Both families would have recently come out from under slavery; this was barely post emancipation.”

Examining the handwriting on the census documents, she said, it’s evident that the same census worker recorded both names, which shows their proximity.

Melvinia Shields grew up on a farm just outside the village of Rex, near Jonesboro, and also in Clayton County.

Mattie was married twice, and had a daughter, Claudie Richie (or Ritchie or Richey), with her first husband.

Claudie married J.M. Ragland (J.M. were initials for “Jerry Miah” said Smolenyak), and their son Steve was Doria Ragland’s grandfather.

Claudie and J.M. moved to Chattanooga, where he worked as a tailor.

So the same Georgia town produced a First Lady and a Royal. Perhaps after Meghan and Harry are married they will stop by Georgia for tea.

Harry and Meghan’s new titles: Duke and Duchess of Sussex

On the morning of the royal wedding Queen Elizabeth II conferred the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, CNN reported.

Harry will hold several titles: His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel. Markle will be known as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.

Titles are decided by the Queen when a relative either comes of age or gets married, CNN reported. The queen can choose from five titles for a man, CNN reported -- duke, marquess, earl, viscount or baron. For a woman, the choices are duchess, marchioness, countess, viscountess and baroness.

The titles of duke and duchess are the highest titles among the five possibilities.

It has been 175 years since a man held the title of Duke of Sussex. That was Prince Augustus Frederick, who was the sixth son and ninth child of George III, the BBC reported. He died in 1843 at age 70.
