TULSA, Okla. — A photo of eight dead puppies in a kiddie pool was originally posted on Facebook on June 12. It has since been taken down, but screenshots of the post have since been reposted several times on social media.

The original post stated that Tulsa Animal Welfare [TAW] had been called out of concern for puppies living next door to the aunt of the individual who originally posted the horrific photo.

“Today, on the hottest day in two years, she put all of these puppies in this plastic pool outside and left them,” the post stated.

In a statement, TAW confirmed that it responded to a call for animal cruelty regarding the post on the dead puppies.

“Tulsa Animal Welfare did receive a call about the incident you referred to. When the Animal Control Officer arrived at the location as described, they were unable to locate the incident. Since the case has been passed over to our Senior Investigator and investigations are ongoing,” said a representative from TAW.

FOX23 asked why the representative from TAW didn’t enter the backyard to search for the puppies.

“While I can’t speak to the specifics of the initial call response other than that they were unable to locate the puppies at the time, I can say that the incident that was reported to Tulsa Animal Welfare involving those puppies is still very much being investigated,” said TAW.

Belinda Cheyney Puzder is an animal rights activist from Claremore and has shared the post with the graphic photo multiple times on her Facebook page.

“I felt heartsick and angry,” Cheyney Puzder said when she came across the post.

She believes that more needs to be done when the city investigates animal cruelty cases.

“Accountability should be covered by the records of the Animal Control Officer after filing out a report. A report that becomes part of a permanent record that tracks the abuser so if additional abuse is reported it is apparent that the person is a repeat offender,” said Cheyney Puzder. “The public doesn’t have confidence that animal cruelty is a concern to the powers that be in the City of Tulsa government. The public feels powerless and helpless as to who to turn to when animal cruelty is ignored. Tulsa is a city that needs to feel action will be taken when animal cruelty occurs.”
