Missing Army Lt. Brian Yang found dead near Mount St. Helens

PORTLAND, Ore. — An Army first lieutenant who went missing near Mount St. Helens was found dead Wednesday afternoon at the bottom of a steep drop, authorities said.

Brian Yang, 25, was last seen at the Coldwater Trail Head at around 12 p.m. PDT on Sunday, KOIN-TV reported. He was believed to be training for an upcoming Ultra Marathon event, according to the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office.

Wednesday afternoon, hikers in the Mount Whittier area reported finding an unresponsive man on a ridge below them at 2 p.m., the television station reported. Deputies said the man matched Yang’s description.

Search and rescue workers arrived and confirmed the person was Yang. He was pronounced dead at the scene, KATU reported.

According to the sheriff’s office, Yang appeared to have fallen down a steep embankment that measured about 200 feet, according to the television station.

Yang was a first lieutenant at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Washington, The Reflector of Battle Ground reported.

Yang’s parked vehicle was found at the trailhead on Monday night, KPTV reported. Yang had no known health problems and was in excellent physical condition, the television station reported.
