ELEPHANT BUTTE, N.M. — A New Mexico teen recently landed a monster 55-pound blue catfish.
The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish said Alonso Ordaz, 13, caught the fish Feb. 22 using cut bait shad with a Muddy River Catfishing Demon Dragon at Elephant Butte Lake, KOAT reported.
Ordaz’s father said they weighed the fish aboard their boat before releasing it. The catch was not weighed on a state scale.
If the weight was accurate, state wildlife officials said the catch likely would have beat the current record of 54 pounds and 4 ounces, KOAT reported.
