U.S. Attorney Trent Shores, Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin, and ATF Assistant Director of Field Operations Thomas Chittum hosted the press conference.

The new gun crime initiative will be meant to focus on investigative and prosecutorial resources in order to reduce gun violence and hold accountable felons and other prohibited persons who illegally possess firearms.

It’s a partnership between local, state, federal and tribal agencies.

Shores says the ATF has provided specific resources for Oklahoma including two new task officers to help with the initiative.

Furthermore, a Tulsa police officer is currently in Virginia training a K9 officer that will be an important resource.

Shores says they also have dedicated Assistant US Attorneys to pick up initiative cases.

Specialty units like the Tulsa Police Crime Gun Unit will also be helpful as getting illegal guns off our streets has always been their main focus.

Officials say they are sending the message, putting criminals on notice that if they illegally possess a gun they are going to be arrested and prosecuted.

“When I think of initiative, I think of action, and action is what Craig was all about,” Chief Franklin said.

Tulsa Police Sgt. Craig Johnson was shot and killed during a traffic stop in June. It’s named the “2150 Initiative” as 2150 was Johnson’s badge number.
