TULSA, Okla. — A world record has been set for the world’s largest pizza party.
The record was broken at the Tulsa-Tulane men’s basketball game at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on the The University of Tulsa (TU) Campus.
The event was organized by Andolini’s Pizza and the World Pizza Champions group, bringing experts in from all over the country and the world.
The owner of Andolini’s, Mike Bausch, said the record is all about community.
“I like everyday people coming together to do something that’s special, that anyone can just walked in here today and leave a Guinness World Record holder and I think there’s something to be said about that,” he said.
Until now the record was held by Rome, Italy, with 1,046 people. Tulsa more than tripled that record with 3,357 people at the Reynolds Center.
Bausch said it’s a testament to Tulsa.
“We took a record that has failed three times this year, three times this year, in New York, in LA and Chicago it’s failed and we didn’t just beat it we tripled it and that is a testament to this city,” he said.
$40,000 were raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Erin Nantois from Make-A-Wish said she’s blown away.
“Our mission at Make-A-Wish is that together we create life changing wishes for children with critical illnesses and this is what together looks like, Tulsa came out and showed up today,” she said.
Bausch said he hopes Tulsa keeps hold of the record for a long time, but he also said if anywhere else beats it, they’ll do it again so Tulsa keeps the record.
FOX23 spoke to some of the people after the record was broken.
“I’m glad that so many people showed up and it was so fun,” said Heather Tirello.
“I finished my slices in less than 60 seconds and I glupped down my water,” said Ella Stegman.
“We’re excited to be in the Guinness Book of World Records, not too many people are in it so pretty excited,” Charles Zitzow said.
After the record was broken, TU released the following statement:
“Before tonight’s Tulsa-Tulane men’s basketball game, the city of Tulsa set a new Guinness World Record for the Largest Pizza Party with 3,357 participants at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The new record more than tripled the previous Guinness World Record of 1,046 that was established on Sept. 8, 2019, by Istituto Romano della Pizza in Rome, Italy.
Participants were required to eat a 1/4 10-inch pizza and drink a small water in their attempt to set the record.”
