Broken Arrow Walmart opens first vision center after Oklahoma law change

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Walmart opened its first vision center in Tulsa County on Monday.

This only became an option in Nov. 2019 when legislation was signed into law allowing optometrists to practice in retail stores. This was after State Question 793 was shot down in 2018 with opponents worries smaller, independent optometrists couldn’t compete with big-box stores like Walmart or Costco.

A ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony for “The Vision Center” was held at the location near East 121st Street South and South Elm in Broken Arrow.

“We are thrilled to provide the people of Broken Arrow and nearby communities with affordable access to all of their eyecare needs,” said James Jones, Walmart’s market health and wellness director for Oklahoma and Arkansas.

This is the first Walmart Vision Center open in the Tulsa area, there are three open in Oklahoma City.

The company plans to open six Vision Centers in Oklahoma in 2022.
